UVMF: A Year of Good Deeds, Animal Rescue, and Support for the Veterinary Community

The Ukrainian Veterinary Medicine Fund (UVMF) is daily work where help is needed most. In a year full of challenges, the Fund continued its mission: to rescue animals, support veterinarians, develop professional education, and strengthen international cooperation.

This article is about the results, people, and stories that prove: UVMF — mission possible.

Charity Veterinary Clinics: Help Where It’s Needed Most

The Charity Veterinary Clinics are a joint project of UVMF and its international partners AVMF and FOUR PAWS in Zaporizhzhia, Nikopol, Irpin, Sumy, Kherson, Kharkiv, Poltava, and Odesa. Assistance is provided free of charge to both pets and stray animals — everyone affected by the war, evacuations, shelling, or difficult life circumstances.

Results That Speak for Themselves

UVMF Director Olena Rudnieva summarizes the scale of the Fund’s work with clear numbers:

  • over 6,000 animals were vaccinated, sterilized, and microchipped

  • over 13,000 animals received medical treatment

  • the Fund’s veterinarians traveled tens of thousands of kilometers to save animals

Behind every number is a life that was saved.

Education and Professional Development: Another Key Focus of UVMF

UVMF works not only where urgent help is needed. The Fund invests in the continuous professional development of Ukrainian veterinarians to ensure that animal care in Ukraine remains at the highest level despite the war.

In just one year, the following took place:

  • 5 school events

  • 5 forums

  • 1 international congress

  • over 2,000 participants

  • over 126 hours of training

These are not just events — they are professional support, a growth environment, and a community that stays united.

International Congress: Support, Expertise, and Solidarity

The international congress organized by UVMF in 2025 brought together hundreds of professionals. Professors and PhDs from 7 countries shared their expertise with Ukrainian colleagues, discussed professional standards, and drew inspiration from the resilience of Ukrainian veterinarians.

Words of support also came from international partners. In particular, Dr. Mark Johnston (Vetstream, ProSalus Foundation) noted that Ukraine maintains high professional standards even under extraordinary conditions — and that the world increasingly understands why Ukraine is worth supporting.

European Integration and Modernization of Veterinary Legislation

Another strategic direction of UVMF is the European integration of veterinary legislation. The Fund unites the veterinary community and works on establishing a Statutory Body for Veterinary Medicine — to modernize legislation in line with EU standards and protect veterinarians’ rights.

UVMF Ambassador Vladlen Ushakov emphasizes: Ukrainian veterinarians today defend not only their country, but also European values. That is why EU standards are a key benchmark for the profession and the system as a whole.
